Today we’re introducing you to Debra Mills-Irvin, a Clinician at Glade House Emergency Shelter.
How long have you worked at House of Ruth? 10 months.
What’s the best part about your job? When clients feel comfortable to come to my office and trust me enough to share their emotions. It feels good to know I am a safe place for them.
Favorite thing to do when you’re not working? After 27 years of marriage, my husband and I still have date nights. I also like connecting with my extended family and my close friends. I’ve been blessed with a good support system, which includes my church family.
Favorite movie of all time? The animated movie The Princess and the Frog, about an African-American girl who encounters obstacles in her life but never loses sight of her dreams. She believes in herself and fights to have a chance to establish a place (a restaurant) where her talent and skills are valued. She’s able to share her love through her skill of cooking for others.
The album you could listen to every day? “Kingdom Book One” by Kirk Franklin and Maverick City Music. Kirk Franklin’s music speaks to my soul and helps me to get through the challenges of the day.
Quote to live by? I have three quotes: 1) “The best things in life aren’t things. The best things in life are the things we share.” 2) “People will forget what you said. People will forget what you did. People will never forget how you made them feel.” ~ Maya Angelou. 3) “Walk through life like everything is already handled.”
One more fun fact about you? Whenever I travel, I purchase postcards and patches to remind me of where I went. I am currently working on a quilt I call my Travel Blanket, where I’m sewing on patches that show the places I’ve traveled. When I get old, I can look back at my quilted blanket and see what fun I had on my travels!
